Description

Go camping and touring in Greifswald, Germany! Great opportunity! Nuclear tourism available now!

Tour #1. Greifswald I (at Baltic Sea).
German-Czech workcamp
25/08 - 03/09
15 vols.
This year the citizens' action group "Bürgerinitiative Kernenergie e.V. zur Förderung alternativer Energiekonzepte" arranges a workcamp together with the Protestant parish in Hohendorf. Hohendorf is a little village near Greifswald. Beside the church lies an old barn, which will be converted to a youth meeting house. Only natural material will be used for this building. Not only ecological constructions are topical for Greifswald, another theme is important for the region. In Lubmin, at the Baltic Sea, lies a special wreck: a closed down nuclear power plant. The atomic industry breaks it up and has built a gigantic radioactive waste dump nearby. There is a political discussion in Germay about the end of the atomic age and this will be the background for discussions in the camp.

W: Hohendorf: construct a loam floor
S: Hohendorf: visit an ecological project,
inspect historical buildings in the region
Greifswald: lectures and discussions about the nuclear power plant and its effects on the region, (perhaps) visit the radioactive waste dump
A: In tents in Hohendorf, with sanitation facilities and field kitchen, you need sleeping bag and thermomat.

Tour #2. The Energiewerke Nord (EWN) company is responsible for the decommissioning of the Greifswald and Rheinsberg nuclear power plants. Eight WWER-440 pressurised water reactors of Russian design and a spent fuel storage facility (pool storage) are located at the Greifswald site. Units 1 - 4 were in operation, unit 5 was in the commissioning process and units 6 - 8 were being constructed when Germany was reunited in 1990. After the reunification it was decided to take the reactors out of operation and to discontinue the construction. In 1990 and 1991 a decision was taken on the immediate dismantling of all the facilities.

After receiving the licences the world's largest dismantling project of nuclear power plants started in November 1995. Meanwhile dismantling activities are very much advanced in units 1 - 5 and in the joint machine room. The preparatory work for the remote-controlled dismantling of activated reactor components was carried out and demonstrated at the almost inactive reactor components of unit 5. In the meantime, dismantling of activated reactor components started in unit 2. A central active workshop serves for the treatment of active components (e.g. decontamination, cutting etc.).

The newly erected Zwischenlager Nord (ZLN - storage facility North) is the focus of the management of both radioactive materials / waste and nuclear fuel. The ZLN serves for conditioning and storage of waste and storage of fuel (dry store).

Furthermore, the management of residues is an important issue, in particular clearance of materials and waste from regulatory control and the clearance measurement technique. The means for the management of residues were improved and supplemented in the past years in order to reduce the dose to personnel and to improve economics.

THE VISIT
The visit will include an introduction into the decommissioning concept and the dismantling techniques and a tour through the following facilities:

...dismantling of units 1 - 5, including the remote-controlled dismantling activities in unit 2,

...central active workshop,

...ZLN - storage facility North

...clearance measuring facilities.

Schedule. The Energiewerke Nord (EWN) will provide the opportunity for a visit of the Greifswald NPPs decommissioning activities. The site is located about 200 km north of Berlin. The trip will take a full day. The following schedule is foreseen:

Means of transport / Time for the journey:

From Berlin to Lubmin:

Bus / 4 hours each.

06:00h
Departure at the "Maritim" hotel, Berlin.

10:00h
Arrival at the Greifswald NPPs.

10:00h - 16:00h
Introduction and tour through the facilities, including a lunch break.

16:00h
Departure for Berlin.

20:00
Arrival at the "Maritim" hotel, Berlin

I always feel so much smarter after I read your descriptions. It's like a mini textbook, it's cool though. I really like viewing your stuff, matias.

I especially like sort of the randomness of this one, although I think the quality is a little something to be desired. I especially like the road leading toward the nuclear plant and what have you.

Excellent work, as always, my friend.
